Alpe di Fanes Grande, with its altitude of above 2000 meters, is an ideal habitat for many alpine species, like Merle à plastron, Cassenoix moucheté, Chocard à bec jaune, Accenteur mouchet, Accenteur alpin, Sizerin cabaret, Linotte mélodieuse, Bec-croisé des sapins, Pipit spioncelle, Mésange noire and many others, while Grand Corbeau, Chocard à bec jaune, Bondrée apivore, and Aigle royal may be soaring between the surrounding peaks.
The area is part of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park and the IBA Dolomites.

The ascent from the parking place Plan dall' Ega' Ega to Col de Locia (the mountain pass and entrance to the Alpe di Fanes valley) is very steep (30-40% gradient) and requires very good fitness and sure-footedness, as well as cautious descent.
