This is one of India's best birding places. Located in the Lower Himalayas, it combines a variety of spectacular birds from low to medium altitudes.
Sattal is a birder's heaven if you come at the right time of year. The name means 'seven lakes', and since the town and its immediate surroundings spread over quite an altitude range, it offers lots of bird species, several of which are hard to see elsewhere. From beauties such as the Indian Paradise-Flycatcher or the Red-billed Leiothrix to exotic species like the Kalij Pheasant or the Speckled Piculet, there are plenty of fascinating birds here.
Much of the area around Sattal is forested, so you also find plenty of owls, woodpeckers, and may other species of forest birds. It is worth spending at least a few days in the area.
Sattal is located 300 km northeast of Dehli in the Lower Himalayas of Uttarakhand, near the town of Bhimtal and not far from Nainital. Press P on the map for directions or coordinates. Getting a rental car from Delhi that includes a driver is quite affordable, but you can also take a train to Haldwali and take it from there. Many of the lodges in and around Sattal specialize in birding and provide local guides.
The Sattal Christian Ashram Bird Hide is a great starting point. There are also several lodges and indiviuals offering own hides.
