Description

Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary has mountainous and lush terrain. This makes hiking away from the single dirt road difficult, except for a few steep trails. But countless birds can be seen and photographed right from that road. Altitudes range from about 1,400 to 2,800 meters (4,400 to 8,500 ft), so the area includes several sub-habitats with different types of birds.

While there are many fascinating birds to be seen here, with more than 450 recorded species, the one that still stands out is the Bugun Liocichla, first discovered in 1995. A colorful blackbird-sized bird, that is one of the rarest in the world. Its habitat, right by the road, is only 2 square kilometers (less than a square mile) in area. Estimates range from about 50 to only THREE pairs of this species still living there.

Accès

Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the West Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh, in the northeastern part of India. You will need local guides with a 4x4 vehicle, plus an upfront permit. Arunachal Pradesh, India's state that is the closest to the Chinese border, is a highly restricted area.

There are only two accommodations in the area, Lama camp and Bompu Camp, so unless you want to drive up from Tenga every day, which makes for a long drive, expect only basic accommodations. Nevertheless, spend at least three days as there are so many species to be seen. Every day will bring something new and fascinating.

Informations supplémentaires

The nights were very cold when I went in April, while daytime temperatures already made for warm afternoons, so bring plenty of layered clothing. No Wifi whatsoever, and phone signals can be spotty.
