Description
Meksikópuszta is located in the Fertő-Hanság National Park in North-West Hungary at the south-eastern edge of Lake Neusiedl (HU: Fertő tó). Though relatively small, it comprises a variety of landscapes from lake shore and reed belts to the typical Hungarian puszta (Pannonian steppes). The birds you can encounter here include several species of geese and ducks e.g., Oie cendrée, Sarcelle d'été, Canard souchet, Nette rousse, Fuligule nyroca; waders such as Combattant varié, Échasse blanche, Avocette élégante, Chevalier aboyeur, Chevalier gambette, Chevalier arlequin, Petit Gravelot, Courlis cendré, Barge à queue noire; reed warblers; herons; raptors including Busard des roseaux, Pygargue à queue blanche, Faucon hobereau, Faucon pèlerin; Guêpier d'Europe, Huppe fasciée, Pie-grièche écorcheur and Bergeronnette printanière are regularly seen in spring and summer and occasionally Tarier des prés and Tarier pâtre can be spotted. Tournepierre à collier, Bécasseau maubèche and Bécasseau sanderling are among rarities that can be encountered in autumn.

It takes about 2,5 hours by car from Budapest but it is merely a 40 min drive from the birdingplaces in neighbouring Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park in Austria.

The southern part of the route follows a path along a small channel and contains 2 small lookout platforms. Another platform is located next to the 8521 road. Unfortunately there is no footpath along the road but usually there is not much traffic so it is safe to walk or ride a bike.
