Lesvos  >  Greece

Much smaller in size compared to the Kalloni saltpans, the Polichnitos saltpans are easier to get an overview during Spring and Autumn migrations.

Description

The Polichnitos saltpans are located on the southern side of the Gulf of Kalloni, and are way smaller compared to the Kalloni saltpans. Therefore, the area is great to get a good overview of the present birds, like waders, waterfowl, gulls and so much more. Starting from the spot where you can park your car for a circular route around the pans, you can scan the fields surrouding the car park for species, like pipits, wagtails, larks and Huppe fasciée. Scattered bushes and trees around the house are good for migrants, like chats, shrikes and flycatchers.

The beach is a nice spot for waders, like breeding Gravelot à collier interrompu, but also many other species, like Bécasseau sanderling, Chevalier sylvain and Petit Gravelot. A track that leads you towards the southern part of the saltpans adjacent to the sea also provides great views over the bay.

The saltpans themselves are fantastic for a large variety of migrating waders, waterfowl, storks, Spatule blanche, egrets, herons and Flamant rose. The small dams between each pan can be covered in foraging waders, like Bécasseau de Temminck, Bécasseau minute, Chevalier sylvain, Bécasseau variable, Bécasseau cocorli, Chevalier aboyeur, Combattant varié and so much more! It is advised to stop and scan often while walking the track along the southern side of the pans. Large flocks of waterfowl can be present too, like Tadorne casarca and Sarcelle d'été, and in winter Canard pilet and Sarcelle d'hiver too. Like the other saltpans, large flocks of Flamant rose are often present.

The surrounding fields are great for migrating raptors, like Busard des roseaux and Busard cendré. Above the wooded hill on the southern side of the pans, flocks of falcons can be seen too, like Faucon kobez during migration.
