Cape Tenaro (aka Tainaro or Cape Matspan) is situated at the end of the Mani Peninsula. It is the southernmost point of mainland Greece, and the second southernmost point in mainland Europe. Cape Tenaro is the first landfall for spring migrant birds returning from Africa after a 400 km crossing of the Mediterraean Sea. In the autumn the long, narrow peninsula of the Mani funnels migrant birds moving south. With limited tree and scrub cover Cape Tenaro is a great place to observe bird migration. Among the birds that can be spotted are Milan noir, Bruant zizi, Bruant cendrillard, Cochevis huppé, Alouette lulu, Huppe fasciée, Guêpier d'Europe, Rollier d'Europe, Héron pourpré, Puffin cendré, Faucon crécerellette, Circaète Jean-le-Blanc, Torcol fourmilier, Tourterelle des bois, flycatchers and warblers.

Nearest airport is at Kalamata. The main road south runs as far as Gerolimenas and minor roads continue to Tainaro village. Bus from Athens or Kalamata takes about 6 hours. The walking route shown is about 5 km.
