Description

The Weiherwald offers a great range of habitats (mixed alluvial woodland, shallow ponds, streams, ditches, meadows, gardens), all in a very small area and close to an urban environment. It is very accessible with paths for pedestrians and cyclists transecting the area. These paths have two benefits: they makes bird observations easy and also mean that the birds are not too shy. A circular walk of the location covers all the habitats mentioned above, with many variations and little detours possible.

There is a notable population of 20 or more Sarcelle d'hiver present here in winter (and well into spring).

The Weiherwald is great for observing and hearing Woodpeckers, with five species possible all year round: Pic mar , Pic épeiche and Pic vert are common here and there is always a chance of Pic noir and Pic épeichette, especially in winter.

The shallow ponds and ditches attract Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, which can be seen fishing or flying from one area of water to another. Bergeronnette des ruisseaux are sometimes present, foraging along the water's edges.

Small flocks of Mésange à longue queue often roam the area, along with Tarin des aulnes, Gros-bec casse-noyaux and the occasional Grive mauvis in winter.

Late spring is a great time to listen to Loriot d'Europe, Rossignol philomèle and Pouillot fitis. With a bit of luck Gobemouche noir can also be seen.

Other birds present all year round include Roitelet triple-bandeau, Sittelle torchepot, Grimpereau des jardins and Mésange nonnette.

In addition to the fantastic birdlife, the Weiherwald is also a hotspot for many (rare) amphibians and insects. No matter what time of year or day, there's always something to enjoy here!
