Description
The "Roter Lug" is a small lake as part of the UNESCO-Biosphere Reserve "Oberlausitzer Heide und Teichlandschaft" (directly translated: "Upper Lusatian heather and pond landscape"), which actually desribes also this site pretty well. The natural appeareance of the lake and the dry, slightly sandy sourrounding of the lake makes it suitable for a variety of bird species. Breeding birds include Huppe fasciée, Tourterelle des bois, Pie-grièche grise, Cygne chanteur and probably also Blongios nain. The birdingplace is not a very big in size, but it is worth visiting it within a tour of the Biosphere Reserve, offering literally more than 1000 lake sites.

Best experience in the Biosphere reserve is on a bike tour. The bike infrastructure in the area is well signposted. For example, the 88 km long bike round tour "Seeadlerradweg" (directly translated: "White-tailed-eagle-bike-way") passes this birdingplace and many other nice birdingplaces. Otherwise you might consider taking your bike in the train, with the next train station located at Klitten about 10km North of this Birdingplace. If you go by car, you can easily park at the entrance of the birdingplace next to the street.
