Some books describe the Wakenitz as the very small sister of the Amazon. Well, being in the wilder parts in an early morning might be a bit like that. Anyhow the Wakenitz is a place of outstanding beauty. Left in peace for 50 years as being the natural border of former Eastern Germany and Western Germany there are still wild and unspoiled parts with Fish Otter, Grass snakes, Loriot d'Europe and of course Martin-pêcheur d'Europe. After the reunification you will still find these areas, although a big motorway has been built right in the heart of the reserve. Although you can visit some parts by car you should definitely walk or hire a bike...perfect is an early morning start from with a canoe the Canoe Centre in Rothenhausen! You can even sleep there! Perfect!
This is by the way the famous area where wild Greater Rheas breed. They escaped about 15 years ago and established apopulation of about 300 birds!
There is also the possibility of taking the tourist ferry which stop at Rothenhusen, Müggenbusch and Lübeck itself. Sometimes it`s possible to take a bike as well.
