The developement of Rickelsbüller Koog Nature Reserve started in 1981 when the former salt marshes were artificially disconnected from the North Sea. The current wetland meadows with low vegetation are breeding sites for Chevalier gambette , Barge à queue noire , Combattant varié , Goéland argenté , Bernache nonnette and Avocette élégante.
From autumn to early spring, the dyked area and the adjacent salt marshes on the dyke's sea-ward side are resting sites of Bernache nonnette , Bernache cravant , Bécasseau maubèche , Bécasseau variable Courlis cendré and Canard siffleur . Observation possibilities depend on the tides of the North Sea.
