Description

The Nierssee is a lake next to the river Niers and is used to control the water level of the river and to store water from the nearby sewage works. The island and the inaccessible banks are used by breeding birds, especially dozens of Grand Cormoran and Héron cendré. Also Martin-pêcheur d'Europe breeds here. During migration season and winter there are waterfowl to be seen. These include Fuligule morillon, Sarcelle d'hiver, Canard pilet and Canard siffleur. There is a viewing platform offering good views of the lake and the island with the breeding birds. The small canal to the Niers river and the river itself offers good opportunities to watch Martin-pêcheur d'Europe while hunting. The surrounding forest is home to many common song birds and woodpeckers. Best periode for bird watching is winter including autumn migration. For the breeding birds spring / early summer it is also ok. At other times the area is less interesting.
