The bird sanctuary 'Lahntal zwischen Marburg und Gießen' is an open river valley along the river Lahn. The area of 750 hectares is dominated by river forest, reed beds and unspoiled old tributaries of the river Lahn. The area is also used for agriculture and many open fields border the river. The river valley has been declared a landscape protection area and is part of the Natura 2000 network. It is one of the best Hessian areas for species such as Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, Gorgebleue à miroir, Blongios nain and Marouette ponctuée. Other birds you can observe in the area are depending on the season Chevalier sylvain, Pluvier doré, Combattant varié, Sterne pierregarin, Guifette noire, Balbuzard pêcheur, Alouette lulu, Busard des roseaux, Busard Saint-Martin, Busard cendré, Faucon émerillon, Pluvier guignard, Grande Aigrette, Cygne chanteur and Hibou des marais.

To cover the stretch between the villages of Roth and Odenhausen by canoe you can book a tour with Lahntours (see link below). Lahntours has an authorisation to organize these tours. Canoe tours are only possible from 1st May to 20th September (between 9am and 6pm). Entry/exit only at the entry/exit points in Roth and Odenhausen.
