Description
In winter, the Hurstsee is home to a great number and variety of ducks and other waterbirds. There are good numbers (between 15 and 100+) of Canard colvert, Canard chipeau, Fuligule morillon, Fuligule milouin, Foulque macroule and Grand Cormoran.
Smaller groups of Sarcelle d'hiver and Grèbe huppé can usually be seen scattered across the lake. Ouette d'Égypte and Cygne tuberculé are often present, as well as Grande Aigrette, Héron cendré, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe and Bergeronnette des ruisseaux along the fringes of the lake.
With a bit of luck, you can also see Harle bièvre, Canard siffleur, Canard pilet, Sarcelle d'été (on spring migration) or even a stunning Harle piette here!
Waterbirds are the main attraction, but the trees and bushes around the lake are worth checking too. There are plenty of common woodland / garden birds, plus a good chance of seeing (or hearing) any of the following: Tarin des aulnes, Gros-bec casse-noyaux, Bouvreuil pivoine, Accenteur mouchet, Roitelet triple-bandeau, Grive mauvis and Pic noir.

The lake is best accessed by car. You can park near the SV Sulzbach sports ground, which is about 200m from the lakeside path.
Note: Access to the western shore (protected area) and parts of the southern shore (fishing club) is prohibited!
