Former military zone rich in wildlife. Featuring open dry grassland, forest and scattered trees.
The Hohe Warte bei Gießen (or directly translated "Tophill near Gießen" ) comprises a diversity of habitat types, such as forests, hedgerows and dry grassland areas. Rare plant communities, that are particularly worth of protection, have developed in a mix of dry and wet habitats at various locations, which have been created partly as a result of the past military utilisation of the area. These habitats are home to numerous rare animal and plant species; many insects, especially butterflies and grasshoppers, some of which are endangered, can be observed on the sparse rough and dry grasslands, the gravel heaps with typical pioneer plants, and the species-rich wet meadows.
Scattered hedges and groups of trees also provide breeding sites for many birds, such as the endangered Pie-grièche écorcheur, Alouette lulu, Pipit des arbres and Pic cendré. During migration it is a perfect resting habitat for Traquet motteux and Tarier des prés. In the future I expect the Huppe fasciée to be a breeding bird here, as the habitat is perfectly suitable for that species.
