North of the Saxon town of Bautzen, the largest contiguous pond landscape in Central Europe extends over 301 km². In the Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichlandschafte, which was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1996. The more than 350 bodies of water within the biosphere reserve are spread over 39 pond groups. One of the most beautiful are the Guttauer Teiche, about 11 km north of the A4 exit "Bautzen Ost" and easy to reach from Dresden under an hour's drive. The 13 small ponds are rich in birds and can be explored by a nature trail. Among the birds you can see are Garrot à oeil d'or, Fuligule milouin, Grèbe castagneux, Butor étoilé, Milan royal, Milan noir, Pygargue à queue blanche, Busard des roseaux, Coucou gris, Rousserolle turdoïde, Rousserolle effarvatte, Sterne pierregarin and Grue cendrée.
