Description

Geltinger Birk nature reserve has a total area of ​​773 hectares and is protected since 1934. The area has has a big diversity of habitats with salt marshes, dunes, sand and gravel-covered beaches, a small oak grove and shallow water areas - the Geltinger Noor, as well as a seagrass meadow extending about 1,000 m into Geltinger Bay. Over the course of a year, around 200 species of birds can be observed, including Pygargue à queue blanche, which is seen almost every day. The more than 90 species of breeding birds include Grue cendrée, Sarcelle d'été, Harle huppé, Sterne naine, Pie-grièche écorcheur and Tarier des prés.

Other birds that can be observed in the area are Gorgebleue à miroir , Tarier pâtre, Spatule blanche, Oie à bec court, Canard pilet, Eider à duvet, Grand Gravelot, Macreuse noire, Pipit maritime, Bernache cravant, Busard des roseaux and Bécasseau variable. During spring migration, in addition to migratory birds of prey, waders and waterfowl, up to 50,000 passerines can be counted per day. In autumn geese, divers and, regularly, skuas can be observed at Birk-Nack, reaching the North Sea via the Flensburg Fjord.

Accès

Geltinger Birk is located on the north-eastern tip of Angeln, at the exit of the Flensburg Fjord. Car park at Mühle Charlotte or Falshöft. Click on a P in the map for directions to a parking. The path through the nature reserve is closed to vehicles. Observation is best on foot or by bike. Strollers are possible.

Hiking trails through the Geltinger Birk: Eule hiking trail (3 km): small circular trail without the Baltic Sea, start: Nieby. Konik hiking trail (6.2 km): around the mill through the hinterland and along the fjord (only on foot!), start: Mühle Charlotte. Hochlandrind hiking trail (10.4 km): hinterland, fjord and Baltic Sea, start: Falshöft. Möwe hiking trail (13.3 km): the big tour around the Birk, start: Falshöft or Mühle Charlotte.

There is an information kiosk with a snack bar at the 'Mühle Charlotte' car park. There are also toilets there (also suitable for the disabled). Two herds of wild horses (Koniks) also live in the Birk, as well as numerous insects, snakes and amphibians. Information is also available at the integrated NABU (Birdlife Germany) station. ATTENTION: There are closures after the storm surge in 2023!
