Geflügelmastanlagen und Kiesgrube Oppin

Sachsen-Anhalt  >  Germany

Unconventional birding spot, that can at first seem very unwelcoming, but harbours one of the area's last breeding sites of Cochevis huppé.

Description

The Geflügelmastanlagen und Kiesgrube Oppin area is characterised by industrial use. Gravel and sand pits and storage, and, in dark irony for a birding website: industrial poultry production sites. It is surrounded by agricultural land and to the west some uncultivated grassland.

The poultry buildings are fenced off and the vegetation is kept short. This seems to be one of the reasons why Cochevis huppé breeds here. In the bushes along the roadside Moineau friquet, Fauvette grisette, Bruant proyer and Linotte mélodieuse can be observed. In the fields around the site Bergeronnette printanière, Faisan de Colchide and Alouette des champs are a regular sight. During migration Traquet motteux and Petit Gravelot visit the barren gravel areas.

Note: The premises of the companies in the area can not be entered under any circumstances! It is only possilbe to watch from the outside. Therefore binoculars or even a scope are recommended.

On the way to the poultry premises from the parking spot on the map, keep your eyes open for overflying Guêpier d'Europe, Faucon crécerelle and other birds of prey.
