Description

Gedenkstätte Stresow is a little memorial of World War II located in the Wendland in midst of a lot of nature. Right next to the memorial is a small lake, where you can often see Harle piette, Harle bièvre and several species of duck in Winter.

A few hundred meters futher there is an observation tower with a nice view over the partially flooded meadows and small bodies of water. In winter they are getting used as a wintering and migration place for thousands of ducks and geese such as Canard pilet, Garrot à oeil d'or, Canard siffleur, Canard chipeau, Sarcelle d'hiver, Sarcelle d'été, Canard souchet, Fuligule milouin, Fuligule morillon, Tadorne de Belon, Bernache nonnette, Oie rieuse, Oie des moissons and Cygne chanteur. If you are lucky than you can spot a Pie-grièche grise in the bushes.

During migration times many waders visit the area. You can observe Vanneau huppé, Bécasseau variable, Grand Gravelot, Petit Gravelot, Courlis cendré, Barge à queue noire, Chevalier guignette, Bécassine des marais, Chevalier sylvain, Chevalier culblanc, Chevalier arlequin, Chevalier gambette, Chevalier aboyeur and sometimes Combattant varié. On the water bodies you can sometimes spot grebes such as Grèbe jougris or Grèbe castagneux or see a Martin-pêcheur d'Europe.

For a better look there is a route on the dike through the meadows so you can see the whole area from different sides. In the summer there are many swallows and Grue cendrée , herons and Cigogne blanche. Héron cendré and Grande Aigrette are not uncommon, with a bit of luck you even can see a pair of Cigogne noire.

From the power poles, the bushes and out of the reed you can hear the songs of Bruant des roseaux, Bruant proyer, Bruant jaune, Fauvette grisette, Phragmite des joncs, Rousserolle effarvatte, Rousserolle turdoïde, Tarier des prés, Tarier pâtre, Alouette des champs and see for example Pie-grièche écorcheur or Bergeronnette printanière.

Over the whole year you can spot many different birds of prey. From the observation tower you can see Busard des roseaux flying over the reed beds, in the whole area Buse variable, Milan royal and Faucon crécerelle are not uncommon. On very good days you can even see a Faucon pèlerin or Bondrée apivore. Also often seen are Milan noir, Busard Saint-Martin and Balbuzard pêcheur and sometimes more down by the river Aland in the trees sit one or two Pygargue à queue blanche.
