Description

The Blankensee can be overlooked best from a boardwalk near the village of the same name. Close views of Panure à moustaches and Rousserolle effarvatte, with luck also Rémiz penduline, are possible from the boardwalk (no scope needed). Butor étoilé is often seen flying out of the reeds near the boardwalk, especially in winter. An occupied Balbuzard pêcheur nest can be seen from the boardwalk in summer.

Thousands of ducks and geese are on the lake in winter. Harle piette, Harle bièvre and Garrot à oeil d'or give good views. Others are Fuligule milouin, Fuligule morillon, Canard siffleur and Canard chipeau. Pygargue à queue blanche is regularly seen. The most common large gull is Goéland pontique.

May is the month for Guifette noire. With luck you can get Guifette leucoptère and Guifette moustac, too. Other good birds in spring are Grèbe à cou noir, Canard pilet and big flocks of swallows.

Walking through the village (Serin cini, Cigogne blanche), make sure to have a look for Martin-pêcheur d'Europe along the river Nieplitz.

On the walk to the tower in the north you pass the small lake Seechen (diminutive of lake "See"). Chances are good for Garrot à oeil d'or, Grèbe castagneux and Grèbe jougris. From the tower you overlook the wetlands of the Ungeheuerwiesen. A breeding Balbuzard pêcheur, Vanneau huppé, Bécassine des marais and with luck Huppe fasciée can be seen. In winter Grue cendrée, Pluvier doré and northern geese are typical species. Pie-grièche grise is regurlarly seen in the open winter landscape.
