Description
Bensheimer Tongruben is an area of former clay pits that have been filled with groundwater since 1960, creating a unique habitat with wet forest, shallow water areas, reeds and wet meadows. The nature reserve covers an area of approximately 92 hectares and is part of the Natura 2000 network.
The area is a resting place for numerous migratory birds on their way to their winter quarters. And many local bird species also live in this area and raise their young here. Birds you can observe include Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, Bécassine des marais, Râle d'eau, Loriot d'Europe, Coucou gris, Faucon pèlerin, Oie cendrée, Bernache du Canada, Ouette d'Égypte, Bruant des roseaux and Fauvette à tête noire.

The Bensheimer Tongruben is located between the towns of Bensheim and Heppenheim. The area can be reached by car or on foot from Bensheim or Heppenheim. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking spot. The walking route indicated on the map is about 4 km (one way).
