Description
The area is of great importance for breeding birds of semi-natural grasslands and wetlands. Around 80 species of breeding birds are recorded annually, including Courlis cendré, Vanneau huppé, Cigogne blanche , Grèbe castagneux, Râle d'eau, Caille des blés, Sarcelle d'été, Sarcelle d'hiver, Canard souchet, Canard chipeau, Faucon hobereau, Coucou gris, Gorgebleue à miroir, Tarier pâtre, Rousserolle effarvatte (rarely Phragmite des joncs and Rousserolle turdoïde) and Pie-grièche écorcheur. Large flocks of Oie rieuse use the area during winter, and also a small group of Oie naine from a rewilding project in Sweden has established a "tradition" to visit the area for wintering, starting in 2017. In late winter, the area serves as roosting place for hundreds of Grue cendrée and during spring migration, a great variety of ducks and waders can be encountered. Occasionally, rarities show up (e.g. Héron pourpré, Fuligule nyroca, Marouette poussin).
