Description

The Chorokhi Delta is located close to Batumi and particularly good during migration, when all kinds of migrants can be expected: raptors, herons, waders, rails, passerines, etc. On a good day birds are virtually everywhere and chances are fair to see rarities like Glaréole à ailes noires, Vanneau sociable, Talève à tête grise, Marouette poussin or Marouette de Baillon. On the negative side: many hunters especially during the weekends, and Batumi's landfill can be smelled. But definitely not to be missed when in Ajara!

Accès

Best to access from the E70 leading from Batumi to the Turkish border at Sarpi. After passing the bridge over Chorokhi River turn right, on a huge rest place for lorries. Then drive along one of the tracks in direction of the coast.

Note: in April 2021 this access road was fenced off. The area is an old soviet firing range and according to the friendly official at the fence it will be demined in the next 4 years and access will be restricted. Following a recommendation of the official we entered the area through a gate from the main road, approximately 500 m further in direction Sarpi. There is a sign indicating that access is prohibited and dangerous, but it is possible to bypass the barrier. In fact many people seem to do. However, this access will probably also be closed in the near future.

The much smaller, northern part of the delta can be accessed from the coastal road from Batumi, passing the waster water treatment plant. Here are a few interesting ponds that are worth a visit.
