Description

Birding in Chachuna Managed Reserve is a rewarding experience due to its exceptional variety of habitats that support a rich avian diversity. The reserve's blend of pristine steppes, savannah-like landscapes, and arid woodlands creates a perfect setting for birdwatching, attracting species typical of both East-Mediterranean and Central Asian landscapes.

Bird enthusiasts can expect to encounter a plethora of passerines such as Verdier d'Europe, Gros-bec casse-noyaux, Bouvreuil pivoine and various shrikes including Pie-grièche écorcheur and Pie-grièche à tête rousse. The area is renowned for its raptors, with sightings of Circaète Jean-le-Blanc, Aigle botté, Aigle des steppes and Aigle impérial being common. Additionally, the nearby Dali Reservoir, surrounded by Tugai forests and sandy canyons, offers excellent opportunities to spot waterfowl like Cormoran pygmée and Nette rousse, as well as the noisy Francolin noir and various interesting warblers and wheatears. The diversity and abundance of birdlife, coupled with the breathtaking natural beauty, make Chachuna a must-visit destination for any birding enthusiast.

Chachuna Managed Reserve is located in the east of Georgia, near the border with Azerbaijan, within the floodplains of the Iori River. About 100 km east of Tblisi. The area is best to enter from the town of Dedoplistskaro.
