In spite of urban development, the Rhine valley is remarkably rich in flora and fauna and the jewel in its crown is the alluvial forest. This forest has managed to remain relatively unspoilt. One of these forests can be found on Rohrschollen Island, only 10 km from Strasbourg city centre. Almost 160 bird species have been seen here. The forest holds 6 species of lowland woodpecker: Pic noir, Pic vert, Pic cendré, Pic épeiche, Pic mar and Pic épeichette. The forest massif also shelters several species of birds of prey, including the Milan noir, attracted by the water courses and stands of stagnant water, which constitute its fishing grounds. The Autour des palombes and the Épervier d'Europe are species typically attracted to the forest habitat itself, which provides them with an excellent hunting ground. Other birds you can see are Grèbe castagneux, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, Pie-grièche écorcheur, Locustelle tachetée and Bruant des roseaux. In addition up to 4000 water birds gather here in winter.

Follow the N 353 (the so-called southern ring road) towards Offenburg. Before you reach the Pflimlin Bridge over the Rhine, take the exit for the Port of Strasbourg and, at the roundabout, head for the incineration plant (usine d’incinération). Continue until you reach Strasbourg hydroelectric plant (usine hydroélectrique de Strasbourg) (follow the signposts). Go past the plant and take the right fork (surfaced road): park in the parking area provided.
Car parking facilities are provided on the French side (before and after the locks) and on the German side. A cycle track following the Alsace canal dyke also leads to and crosses the site. Signposted trails (the Greylag Goose trail, the Old Rhine trail, the Gallery Forest trail) allow visitors to explore the ecological treasures on show.

Français: Prendre la N 353 (dite rocade sud) vers Offenbourg. Avant le pont Pfimlin sur le Rhin, prendre la sortie « Port de Strasbourg », puis au rond point la direction « Usine d’incinération ». Continuer jusqu’à l’ « Usine hydroélectrique de Strasbourg » (suivre le fléchage). Dépasser l’usine et prendre la bifurcation à droite (route goudronnée) : se garer sur l'aire de stationnement prévue à cet effet.
Des places de stationnement pour véhicules sont aménagées du côté français (avant et après les écluses) et du côté allemand. Une piste cyclable empruntant la digue du canal d'Alsace permet également de rejoindre et de traverser le site. Des sentiers balisés (sentier de l'oie cendrée, sentier du Vieux Rhin, sentier forêt galerie) permettent de découvrir la richesse écologique présente.
