Description
The Seudre estuary is home to a large portion of the population of the nanmetum subspecies of the Gorgebleue à miroir, which is endemic to the French Atlantic coast. With a bit of luck it can be observed here (other good spots are the Pointe de la Coubre, Marais de Brouage and RNMO). Some breeding birds of the Moulin des Loges reserve are Bergeronnette printanière, Bouscarle de Cetti, Hirondelle rustique, Échasse blanche and more.
Nearby Spatule blanche and different heron species, such as Bihoreau gris are breeding, as well as Sterne pierregarin and Élanion blanc. Besides from that you can observe Sarcelle d'été and several limicole species during migration, such as Combattant varié, Barge à queue noire (keep your eyes open for the islandica subspecies), Bécasseau minute etc. (see the list below). The open landscape also allows good observations of migrating passerines, like Tarier des prés, Gobemouche noir, Rougequeue à front blanc or Traquet motteux, as well as Torcol fourmilier. On the nearby fields you can observe Perdrix rouge, Pluvier doré (only during winter), Vanneau huppé and Bruant proyer. Note that in end of August the hunt for waders and ducks begins, which makes good observations harder.
In the summer 2025 a Bécasseau tacheté and a Chevalier stagnatile were stationary on the side of the road for a while. I was also able to observe a Aigrette garzette x Aigrette des récifs hybrid several times in the area.
