Mont Caroux represents the eastern limit of the Espinouse mountains. There is a rich forestry area where you can have a chance to see Torcol fourmilier, Hypolaïs polyglotte, Pouillot de Bonelli and Sittelle torchepot. There are also areas of heath which are home to Pie-grièche écorcheur, Milan noir and Vautour fauve. And look out for Aigle royal. More than 10 pairs breed in the area. Although visible all year round, this large raptor preferably performs acrobatic courtship displays in January and February. Other interesting birds you can see in the area are Circaète Jean-le-Blanc, Monticole de roche, Monticole bleu, Petit-duc scops, Fauvette mélanocéphale Roitelet huppé and Bruant fou. In winter you have a chance to see Tichodrome échelette, Accenteur alpin and Niverolle alpine in the area.
