A fantastic place for resting geese, ducks and different waderbirds. The area has five birdwatching towers.
Liminka Bay is an internationally renowned, valuable bird habitat and an important resting area for migrating birds. One of Finlands best birdingplaces. The shallow seaside meadows, the wide reed beds, the willow thickets and the seaside birch forests provide habitats and rest spots for a large variety of bird species. In the Liminka Bay area, roughly 200 bird species are sighted annually, of which about 160 nest in the area. There are also rarities amongst the birds like Barge à queue noire, Oie naine, Sterne hansel and Butor étoilé. More common are many species of ducks, Grue cendrée, Cygne chanteur, Vanneau huppé, Courlis cendré, Courlis corlieu, Combattant varié, Bécassine des marais and Busard des roseaux. In the Liminka Bay area, the high season begins in April, at the time of the migration of geese, and the spring is culminated by the mating dance of Combattant varié. The high season lasts until October, when the last swans fly to the south as the bay freezes over. The area boasts five birdwatching towers, from which it is easy to observe birds. Virkkula birdwatching tower is the most popular one at Liminka Bay. The great two-storey birdwatching tower opens a wide view across Liminka Bay. The east-side grazing area is home to Courlis cendré, Barge à queue noire and Combattant varié. In the autumn there are large gatherings of waterbirds.
Liminka is located at 15 minutes drive to the south from Oulu, about 20 kilometres from Oulu airport at Oulunsalo. The distance between Liminka and Oulu railway station is about 25 kilometres. You can park near to the big Visitor Center (Naturum). The Visitor Centre and Hotel-Restaurant is open daily 10 am – 4 pm until 30 April. Starting from 1 May open daily 10 am – 6 pm. There is a 600-metre duckboard path to the Virkkula birdwatching tower from the Visitor Centre. The wide duckboard path to the birdwatching tower is accessible on wheelchair and with baby carriages.
