The best time to visit Kotojärvi is spring migration time (from March to May). The lake floods every spring and it gathers migratory birds to the area. Usually thousands of geese and ducks, sometimes also more or less waders, stop in the area during the migration. In summer Kotojärvi and its reedbeds are good for many warblers and rails. In summer the best time to visit Kotojärvi is probably the nighttime. During the autumnal migration Kotojärvi is not as "good" a birding place as in springtime. In winter hundreds of swans (Cygne chanteur) linger in the area until waters freeze.
