Description

Jerup Strand comprises a flat sandy beach with a single line of dunes, marshland and grazed meadows. It is situated on the shore of the Kattegat north of Frederikshavn. Several species of wader breed in the area, including Huîtrier pie, Grand Gravelot, Chevalier gambette and now and again Avocette élégante.

Jerup is a stopover site for several duck species, including Canard siffleur and Sarcelle d'hiver. During migrating season other birds arrive, including Harle huppé, Tadorne de Belon, Pluvier doré, Pluvier argenté, Bécasseau variable, Vanneau huppé, Bécasseau maubèche, Courlis cendré and Bécasseau minute. Now and again, flocks of Bernache cravant and Bernache nonnette and a few Oie à bec court stage on the meadows. Oie cendrée can be seen throughout the year.

In winter there are flocks of Bécasseau sanderling running along the sea’s edge, and one can be lucky enough to spot a Hibou des marais over the meadows. Buse pattue and Busard Saint-Martin can also be seen flying over the meadows, together with flocks of Linotte à bec jaune and Bruant des neiges. Small flocks of Alouette haussecol and a few Bruant lapon appear now and then. Faucon pèlerin is a regular visitor.

Just north of the village, turn east along Fredborgvej (there is a sign to Jerup Strand). At the beach is a car park, from where one can get onto the beach. Most birds can usually be seen at the southern end of the area. Note: the area is privately owned but it is possible to park and walk along the beach. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
