Description
Borreby Mose is a large area with bog and reedbeds. Around the bog are extensive meadows used for grazing. Despite attempts to drain and cultivate, today the site is protected under Natura 2000 and serves as a vital refuge for birds. The reedbeds host breeding Butor étoilé, Busard des roseaux, Panure à moustaches, Phragmite des joncs, Rousserolle effarvatte and occasionally rarities like Locustelle luscinioïde and Rousserolle turdoïde. The wet meadows, shallow pools and muddy edges attract many waders and meadow-birds like Barge à queue noire, Combattant varié, Vanneau huppé, Chevalier gambette, Huîtrier pie, Grand Gravelot, and Avocette élégante.
During migration thousands of geese roost in the area, joined by ducks like Canard pilet, Canard souchet, Sarcelle d'hiver and Fuligule morillon. Winter brings Harle piette, Garrot à oeil d'or, and Busard Saint-Martin. A regular resident is Pygargue à queue blanche. Less common birds that visit Borreby Mose include Sterne caspienne and Phalarope à bec étroit. Every year rarities turn up in the area, especially during migration. For example Bécasseau tacheté and Cigogne noire have been observed.

Borreby Mose is located in south-west Sjælland, just south of the town of Skælskør. Access is straightforward: from Skælskør, head south toward Borreby/Fornetofte. Just past the turnoff to Borreby Gods, you’ll find a parking area with a trail leading through reedbeds to a dike overlooking Skælskør Fjord. This area attracts many birds, including cormorants, swans, Eider à duvet, Harle huppé and a chance on Panure à moustaches.
Another parking spot 500 meters further along the road offers good views across the wetland. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking spot.
