This shallow lake surrounded by reed beds and rocky slopes is an ornithological reserve. Almost 170 bird species were recorded in the area.
Kolansko Blato is a Mediterranean marsh on the island of Pag. The site is characterised by a shallow lake and wetland vegetation. The immediate surroundings are cultivated fields and rocky pastures. The reserve is an important feeding, resting or overnight stay stop during spring and autumn bird migrations for birds. Some birds winter in the area, like Harelde boréale in 2023/2024. But also 66 species of birds breed in the area, including Rousserolle turdoïde, Grèbe castagneux, Nette rousse, Oedicnème criard, Perdrix bartavelle, Busard des roseaux, Pie-grièche écorcheur, Chevêche d'Athéna and Pie-grièche à tête rousse.
You can explore the area via the dirt roads south, east and north of the lake, but the lake itself is not accessible. Previously, the elevated bird hide on the edge of the lake was accessible via a path, but nowadays new holiday homes have been built and the path is no longer publicly accessible. So you have to ask permission from the owner if you want to walk to the lake via their property. Note that the bird hide is not in very good condition (some steps are broken off or loose), but due to its higher position it does give you a good overview of the lake.
Kolansko Blato is located on the south coast of the island of Pag between Novalja and Kolan. A dirt road in good condition leads you to the beach where you can park the car. Click on the P in the map for directions. From the parking you can explore the area on foot.
