This site contains areas of mature forest, forest in regeneration, pastures, agroforestry zones, rivers and streams. 234 birds have been recorded to date.
At Kuàkuari you can record more than 85 species or more in a single day. There are many birds that are endemic to the Pacific side of Costa Rica and western Panama, such as Orange-collared Manakin, Golden-naped Woodpecker, Fiery-billed Aracari, Marbled Wood-Quail, White-crested Coquette, Costa Rican Swift, Charming Hummingbird, Chiriqui Foliage-gleaner, Riverside Wren and Spot-crowned Euphonia. Other abundant and striking species are Scarlet Macaw, Blue-crowned Manakin, White-ruffed Manakin, Red-capped Manakin, White-ruffed Manakin, Golden-crowned Spadebill, Fasciated Tiger-Heron and Royal Flycatcher. The place has a cabin from where you can watch birds up close with a feeder.
You can enter from Quepos or Parrita along the coastal route, turning off on Route 301 towards Acosta until you reach the community of Alto Parritón. The entrance through San José, Acosta is done by route 301 and it takes about 2 hours to get to Alto Parritón. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended since the last 2 km are in poor condition. If you travel by light vehicle or 4x2 you must park it in the town that is 2 km before reaching Kuàkuari.
The site has a circular path of about 8km in length, medium-high difficulty. It crosses several sectors such as pastures, cultivated areas, mature forest and forest in regeneration, streams and a river. For a more easy walk, you can watch birds in the lower part of the path that runs parallel to the river.
