Description

Hacienda Barú is a well-developed ecolodge that welcomes day visitors and offers several nature tours. It manages access to the surrounding Barú National Wildlife Reserve. Wedged in between the sea and the main coastal road, the reserve is comprised of distinctly different areas, as there are 330 hectares of rainforest, dry forest, mangroves and wetlands. These areas host different animal species. To the south of the lodge is a dense rainforest with several trails plus a treetop-level platform. To the north, a dry forest gradually transforms into a wetland as you get closer to the coast. This part again has a few trails for easy exploration. It includes several bushes that regularly attract hummingbirds. Lastly, there is the beach area, right on the Pacific Ocean.

Among the numerous bird species found here are Orange-collared Manakin, Montezuma Oropendola, Fiery-billed Aracari, White-necked Puffbird, Slaty-tailed Trogon, Lesson's Motmot, Scrub Euphonia, American Pygmy Kingfisher, Cocoa Woodcreeper, Black-hooded Antshrike, and Olivaceous Piculet.

Accès

Hacienda Barú is located just north of the coastal town of Dominical, in the Puntarenas region in southwestern Costa Rica, 40 km southeast of Quepos and 140 km off San José.

From San José, it takes about 4 hours by car to get there. The turnoff on Route 34 is easily missed, so watch for the Hacienda Barú sign. (If you reach the turnoff to San Isidro, close to Dominical, you went too far.) There is a parking lot right in front of the hacienda’s visitor center. Press P on the map for directions.
