Brackendale Eagle Run presents itself as a refuge for significant numbers of Bald Eagles during the winter months with a rather stunning backdrop.
Brackendale Eagle Run provides excellent views over a river watershed where many Bald Eagles congregate during the winter months. The site held the greatest count of Bald Eagles for the winter of 1994 at 3,769 eagles. The eagles from the regions of Alaska, (northern) British Colombia and the Yukon are attracted by chum salmon in the Squamish River and can be seen perching, hunting and eating the salmon.
Bald Eagle numbers peak in the months of December through to January, with reasonable numbers from October/November through to February. Some excellent informative boards provide information such as on ageing techniques. A monitoring programme exists with counts twice daily from november to January. Many sites nearby are also worth visiting.
Brackendale Eagle Run is located in Brackendale, 70 km north of Vancouver. A car park adjacent to the viewing dyke and site can be accessed from Government Road off the Sea to Sky Highway (British Columbia Highway 99 - Cache Creek, serving Greater Vancouver and the Squamish–Lillooet corridor). Excellent views can be found all along the dyke and is accessible to wheelchair users with a ramp. Press P on the map for directions to the car park.
