Description

ƛ̓éxətəm Regional Park is abundant with bird species thanks to its varied habitat areas, including river, pond, marshland, field, woodlands, and gardens. Birding at ƛ̓éxətəm is mainly from the flat, wide gravel paths that traverse the park, many of which are elevated on dykes that provide good views across the surrounding fields.

Highlighted resident species found here include Wood Duck, Pied-billed Grebe, Virginia Rail, Ring-necked Pheasant, Great Blue Heron, Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Belted Kingfisher, Anna's Hummingbird, Marsh Wren, Bewick's Wren, and Red-winged Blackbird.

In the spring, this is a good location for spotting Mountain Bluebird, American Bittern, Turkey Vulture, Osprey, Swainson's Thrush, Rufous Hummingbird, Band-tailed Pigeon, Savannah Sparrow, Yellow Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, and a wide variety of swallows.

Summer brings in Lazuli Bunting, Eastern Kingbird, Willow Flycatcher, Cedar Waxwing, Black-headed Grosbeak, and Bullock's Oriole.

Many of the spring migrants pass back again in Fall. Numerous waterfowl, sparrows, and several other species return at this time, including the occassional Northern Shrike.

Winter is especially good for waterfowl, including Hooded Merganser, Ring-necked Duck, American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, Bufflehead, and Northern Shoveler.

As long as it's not raining, you are bound to have a great birding day at ƛ̓éxətəm Regional Park!

Informations supplémentaires

ƛ̓éxətəm comes from the language of the Kwikwetlem First Nation, the Indigenous people whose traditional territory includes the area where the park is located. The name was adopted on July 1, 2023, replacing the former name Colony Farm Regional Park. The Kwikwetlem First Nation and Metro Vancouver Regional District announced that the park would be renamed to ƛ̓éxətəm, which translates into "be invited".
