The Vinderhoutse Bossen are valuable because in some parts there has been forest for more than 100 years. However, you will not find many old large trees there, because in the past many poplars were planted for the production of wood. These trees are now often starting to die. The abundance of dead wood is an important added value for many insects and therefore also for birds. It gives the forest a wild impression. The old forest core of approximately 35 hectares, is part of the bigger Vinderhoutse Bossen (240 hectares in total). Birds you may find in the area include Pic épeichette, Fauvette à tête noire, Fauvette des jardins, Grive musicienne, Tarin des aulnes, Coucou gris, Grimpereau des jardins, Bondrée apivore and Faucon hobereau.

Nederlands: De Vinderhoutse Bossen zijn waardevol omdat er op sommige delen al meer dan 100 jaar bos aanwezig is. Veel oude grote bomen vind je er echter niet terug, want in het verleden werden er veel populieren aangeplant voor de productie van hout. Deze bomen beginnen nu veelal af te sterven. Het vele dode hout is een belangrijke meerwaarde voor veel insecten en dus ook voor vogels. Het geeft het bos een wilde indruk. De oude boskern van zo’n 35 hectare, die in 2017 werd aangekocht door Natuurpunt, maakt deel uit van de groenpool Vinderhoutse Bossen (in totaal 240 hectare). Vogels die je in het gebied kunt aantreffen zijn onder meer Pic épeichette, Fauvette à tête noire, Fauvette des jardins, Grive musicienne, Tarin des aulnes, Coucou gris, Grimpereau des jardins, Bondrée apivore en Faucon hobereau.

The Vinderhoutse Bossen are located northwest of the city of Ghent. There are numerous hiking trails through the area. The red route (Leeuwenhof walk) is 4.3 kilometers long and takes you along and through the old forest core. Click on the P on the map for directions to a parking lot.

Nederlands: De Vinderhoutse Bossen liggen ten noordwesten van de stad Gent. Er lopen tal van wandelroutes door het gebied.
