The Lozerheide (Lozer heathlands) has a rather misleading name. It is not a heathland but a forest. The original heathland was transformed into a forest in the previous century. You can take a beautiful circular walk of about 7 km through the fairly open and wet deciduous forest of 210 hectares. The forest contains various plots with wet grasslands and flood meadows. In the middle of the forest is a beautiful large pond. Next to it are several small ponds with reed beds. This mosaic of various habitats ensures that you can see many different bird species in the area. In the forest you can find five woodpecker species and other forest birds. On the ponds and in the reed beds are various species of ducks, geese, herons and reed birds. Birds that you can encounter in the area include: Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, Pic épeichette, Pic noir, Loriot d'Europe, Bruant des roseaux, Rousserolle effarvatte, Fuligule milouin, Mésange boréale, Coucou gris, Grèbe castagneux and Bergeronnette des ruisseaux.

Nederlands: De Lozerheide heeft nogal een misleidende naam. Het is geen heidegebied maar een bosgebied. Het oorspronkelijke heidelandschap werd in de vorige eeuw omgevormd tot een bos. Je kunt een mooie rondwandeling maken van zo'n 7 km door het vrij open en natte loofbos van 210 hectare. In het bos liggen ook enkele natte graslanden en vloeiweides. In het midden van het bos ligt een prachtige grote vijver. Ernaast liggen nog enkele kleine vijvers met veel rietkragen. Deze mozaïek van diverse leefgebieden zorgt ervoor dat je veel verschillende vogelsoorten kunt zien in het gebied. In het bos kun je vijf soorten spechten en andere bosvogels aantreffen. Op het vijvers en in de rietkragen diverse soorten eenden, ganzen, reigers en rietvogels. Vogels die je kunt tegenkomen zijn onder meer Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, Pic épeichette, Pic noir, Loriot d'Europe, Bruant des roseaux, Rousserolle effarvatte, Fuligule milouin, Mésange boréale, Coucou gris, Grèbe castagneux en Bergeronnette des ruisseaux.

The Lozerheide is located in the municipality of Bocholt, directly north of the village of Lozen. On the southern edge of the forest there is a free parking lot on Fabriekstraat. Press the P on the map for directions to the parking lot. Two marked hiking trails start from the parking lot. The red walk of 7 km (indicated on the map below) and the yellow walk of 3 km. Waterproof footwear is recommended in this wet area and in winter boots may sometimes be necessary as the paths can be muddy and wet after heavy rain.

Nederlands: De Lozerheide ligt in de gemeente Bocholt, direct ten noorden van het dorp Lozen. Aan de zuidelijke rand van het bos ligt een gratis parkeerterrein aan de Fabriekstraat. Druk op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar de parkeerplaats. Vanaf de parkeerplaats vertrekken 2 gemarkeerde wandelroutes. De rode wandeling van 7 km (aangegeven op de kaart hieronder) en de gele wandeling van 3 km. In dit waterrijke gebied is waterdicht schoeisel aan te raden en in de winter kunnen laarzen soms nodig zijn als de paden na veel regen modderig en nat kunnen zijn.

To avoid confusion, it is good to know that just across the border in the Netherlands near the town of Weert there is also a nature reserve called Lozerheide. However, this nature reserve near Weert has a completely different character and is an open heathland.
