Groot Rietveld is an important breeding area for waterbirds. It has a seize of 80 hectare. Among the birds you can see here are Busard des roseaux, Panure à moustaches, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, Gorgebleue à miroir, Spatule blanche, Grèbe castagneux, Grèbe à cou noir, Sarcelle d'été, Canard souchet and Butor étoilé.

Nederlands: Groot Rietveld is een beetje een vreemde plek, midden in de industriegebieden van Antwerpen. Maar een echt goede vogelplek bestaande uit 2 vijvers, gedeeltelijk met riet. Groot Rietveld is een belangrijk broedgebied voor watervogels. Het heeft een oppervlakte van 80 hectare. Onder de vogels die je hier kunt zien zijn Busard des roseaux, Panure à moustaches, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, Gorgebleue à miroir, Spatule blanche, Grèbe castagneux, Grèbe à cou noir, Sarcelle d'été, Canard souchet en Butor étoilé.

By car from Antwerp: On the Expresweg towards the coast, take the Zwijndrecht industrial area exit. At the traffic lights, continue straight ahead and take the Expresweg to the right just before the railway bridge. This is the Kwarikweg from which you have a wonderful overview of the Groot Rietveld.
By car or bicycle from Beveren or the Waasland: Drive to the center of Kallo. Turn right at the traffic lights in the center. Turn right just before the power station's entrance gate. You leave the entrance to Fort Sint-Marie 100 meters further on the left and you turn right onto the 'dijk' (Kwarikweg). In front of you is the sprayed on (northern) part of the Groot Rietveld. Follow the asphalt road to the right to view the entire west side of the area.
By bike from Antwerp: Take the bike path next to the Expresweg to the coast and ride along the entire industrial area of Zwijndrecht. Just before the railway bridge you take the Expresweg on the right. This is the Kwarikweg from which you have a wonderful overview of the Groot Rietveld.
By bike from Zwijndrecht: Drive via the Neerstraat to the car viaduct over the Expresweg (there is a two-way cycle path next to the motorway). Once you cross the bridge you continue to follow the Expresweg past the traffic lights. Just before the railway bridge you take the Expresweg on the right. This is the Kwarikweg from which you have a wonderful overview of the Groot Rietveld.
By public transport: Take Bus 83 (from Antwerp Left Bank via Beveren-Markt) or Bus 88 (from tram terminal Zwijndrecht) to the center of Kallo. Cross the traffic lights again in the direction of Expresweg. After 20 meters you turn left towards Park van Kallo. Walk past the park (or take a look) and continue straight on via a cobblestone road until you reach Groot Rietveld. The Kwarikweg is located on the oil tanks with a view of the entire Groot Rietveld.
The site is not big and easy accessible. No roads on the site itself but along the edges, where you can park and watch birds over the reedbeds.

Nederlands: Met de auto vanuit Antwerpen: Neem op de Expresweg richting kust de afslag industrieterrein Zwijndrecht. Ga bij de stoplichten rechtdoor en neem vlak voor de spoorbrug de Expresweg naar rechts. Dit is de Kwarikweg van waaruit je een prachtig uitzicht hebt over het Groot Rietveld.
Met de auto of fiets vanuit Beveren of het Waasland: Rijd naar het centrum van Kallo. Sla rechtsaf bij de stoplichten in het centrum. Sla net voor de toegangspoort van de elektriciteitscentrale rechtsaf. U verlaat de ingang van Fort Sint-Marie 100 meter verder aan de linkerkant en gaat rechts de 'dijk' (Kwarikweg) op. Voor u ligt het bespoten (noordelijke) deel van het Groot Rietveld. Volg de asfaltweg naar rechts om de hele westkant van het gebied te overzien.
Met de fiets vanuit Antwerpen: Neem het fietspad naast de Expresweg naar de kust en rijd langs het hele industriegebied van Zwijndrecht. Net voor de spoorbrug gaat u rechts de Expresweg op. Dit is de Kwarikweg van waaruit je een prachtig uitzicht hebt over het Groot Rietveld.
Met de fiets vanuit Zwijndrecht: Rij via de Neerstraat naar het autoviaduct over de Expresweg (er is een tweerichtingsfietspad naast de snelweg). Nadat u de brug bent overgestoken blijft u de Expresweg volgen tot voorbij de verkeerslichten. Net voor de spoorbrug gaat u rechts de Expresweg op. Dit is de Kwarikweg van waaruit je een prachtig uitzicht hebt over het Groot Rietveld.
Met het openbaar vervoer: Neem bus 83 (vanaf Antwerpen Linkeroever via Beveren-Markt) of bus 88 (van tramterminal Zwijndrecht) naar het centrum van Kallo. Steek de verkeerslichten weer over richting de Expresweg. Na 20 meter gaat u linksaf richting Park van Kallo. Loop langs het park (of neem een kijkje) en ga rechtdoor via een kasseiweg tot aan Groot Rietveld. De Kwarikweg is gelegen aan de olietanks met uitzicht over het gehele Groot Rietveld.
De site is niet groot en gemakkelijk toegankelijk. Geen wegen op het terrein zelf maar langs de randen, waar je kunt parkeren en vogels kunt kijken over de rietvelden.
