The Gasthuisbossen are actually seven forests: Drie Blotenbos or Hogebos, Godtschalckbos, Groenenburg, Papenelst or Twaalf Gemeten, Zandvoordebos and the Zwarte Leen. Many old and dead trees have been left standing in these forests, resulting in many woodpeckers such as Pic noir, Pic épeiche, Pic mar, Pic épeichette and Pic vert that make their nests in the area. With a bit of luck they can be admired. Birds of prey such as Bondrée apivore and Autour des palombes also hunt in the forests. The area is approximately 200 hectares in size and is well signposted.

Nederlands: De Gasthuisbossen bestaan uit heel wat oude en jonge bossen, waar je de 5 spechtensoorten kan waarnemen. Ze zijn door aangename wandelpaden verbonden. Het zijn een zevental bossen: Drie Blotenbos of Hogebos, Godtschalckbos, Groenenburg, Papenelst of Twaalf Gemeten, Zandvoordebos en het Zwarte Leen. Heel wat oude en dode bomen heeft men laten staan in deze bossen met als het gevolg dat spechten zoals Pic noir, Pic épeiche, Pic mar, Pic épeichette en Pic vert zich daar vestigen en met wat geluk te bewonderen zijn. Ook roofvogels zoals Bondrée apivore en Autour des palombes jagen daar rond. Het gebied is ongeveer een 200 hectare groot en is goed aangeduid met bewegwijzering.

You can park your car in various places at Kleine Ieperstraat, 8902 Zillebeke. Click on a P in the map for directions. There are many footpaths, but also cycle paths in the area. The 3 km circular walk indicated on the map is just one of many possibilities and can easily be extended.
