The Ballewijer nature reserve is enclosed in the urban areas of Zonhoven and Molenheide. The area consists of two ponds. The ponds with their reed beds are of great value for waterfowl, amphibians and dragonflies. The edge of the marsh and ponds is a biotope that mainly attracts Gorgebleue à miroir and Râle d'eau. The marsh contains both Bécasse des bois and Bécassine des marais. The small reed beds are home to breeding birds like Rousserolle effarvatte and Bruant des roseaux. Other birds that you can see are Balbuzard pêcheur, Blongios nain, Grèbe huppé, Grèbe castagneux, Sarcelle d'été, Canard chipeau, Fuligule morillon, Fuligule milouin and Canard souchet and also waders during bird migration.

Nederlands: Natuurgebied De Ballewijer ligt ingesloten in de bebouwing tussen Zonhoven centrum en Molenheide. Het bestaat uit twee vijvers. De vijvers zijn met hun rietkragen van grote waarde voor watervogels, amfibieën en libellen. De rand van het moeras en de vijvers is een biotoop dat vooral Gorgebleue à miroir en Râle d'eau aantrekt. In het moeras komen zowel Bécasse des bois als Bécassine des marais voor. De kleine rietkragen herbergen broedvogels als Rousserolle effarvatte en Bruant des roseaux. Andere vogels die je kunt zien zijn Balbuzard pêcheur, Blongios nain, Grèbe huppé, Grèbe castagneux, Sarcelle d'été, Canard chipeau, Fuligule morillon, Fuligule milouin en Canard souchet en gedurende de vogeltrek ook steltlopers.
