The Assebroekse Meersen is a nature reserve near the city of Bruges. The 420 ha area consists of low-lying wet meadows and hayfields, surrounded by rows of pollard willows and poplars. Due to the low location and the confluence of a number of streams, the area is a wet and swampy hay meadow area. Wellies are recommended during wet periods. A network of streams, ditches and canals ensures water management in the area and contributes to the charm of this landscape. Linked to the winter flooding of several streams, the Assebroekse Meersen provide a resting place and foraging site for waders and herons such as Courlis cendré, Courlis corlieu, Barge à queue noire, Chevalier aboyeur, Chevalier culblanc, Vanneau huppé and Aigrette garzette. The pollard willows offer plenty of breeding opportunities for Chevêche d'Athéna and Rougequeue à front blanc.

Het 420 ha grote gebied is een geheel van laaggelegen vochtige weiden en hooilanden, omringd door rijen knotwilgen en populieren. Door de lage ligging en de toeloop van een aantal beken is het meersengebied van nature een nat en moerassig hooilandgebied. Tijdens vochtige periodes zijn laarzen hier geen overbodige luxe. Een netwerk van beken, sloten en grachten zorgt voor de waterbeheersing in het gebied en draagt bij tot de charme van dit landschap. Gekoppeld aan de winterse overstromingen van enkele beken vormen de Assebroekse Meersen een pleisterplaats en foerageerplaats voor steltlopers en reigerachtigen zoals Courlis cendré, Courlis corlieu, Barge à queue noire, Chevalier aboyeur, Chevalier culblanc, Vanneau huppé en Aigrette garzette. De knotwilgen bieden rijkelijk broedgelegenheid aan Chevêche d'Athéna en Rougequeue à front blanc.
