Eastern side of the Sanddelta and Rhine River Mouth in Lake Constance.
The Schleihenloch and Sanddelta is the eastern side of the Sanddelta and Rhine River Mouth in Lake Constance (Bodensee). Regarding bird species the area is similar to "Sanddelta and Rhine River Mouth - Western Side" (see the link on the description on Birdingplaces below).
On the eastern side the reed beds are better for Héron pourpré (breeding), very good for Bihoreau gris and occassional Marouette poussin (on migration, Apr/Sep), Panure à moustaches and Rémiz penduline. Also in this part of the Rhine River Mouth the water level is crucial. Walking down the river damn towards the mouth you can expect more or less similar species as depicted in Sanddelta and Rhine River Mouth - Western Side.
Particularly during spring and autumn migration to walk both sides is recommendable. Often the eastern side (right-hand side in flow direction) is less busy with people and birds have not yet been scared away. There can be definitely birds that you cannot spot from the other side of Rhine (so possibly miss them).
Coming from the city of Bregenz, you first pass the big river Bregenzer Aach, passing Hard and shortly before you come to big New Rhine and the brigde across is, there is small river called Donrbirner Aach. You pass this latter one and right after you turn right. Following this road (alway parallel to the new Rhine, but north of it you drive all the way where you can park you car. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. If coming with a bike you can go on beyond the barrier. Even if the barrier is open do not go beyond with the car.
Best to walk on top of the damm from where you have very good looks onto the reed beds and follow the damm all the way towards the New Rhine river mouth.
In winter the area can also be rewarding for overwintering water birds ( Plongeon catmarin, Macreuse noire and Macreuse brune, Fuligule milouinan, etc.) which seem to gather between the damm and the Bregenzer Bucht (to the N, towards Lindau).
