Description

The village of Rust is located at the west of Lake Neusiedl. The village has around 10 pairs of Cigogne blanche breeding on roofs and chimneys each year. Just outside the village, there is a small observation tower overlooking the marsh area of Lake Neusiedl and its reed belt. Depending on the water level of the lake, you can spot different ducks and/or waders and the ever-present Oie cendrée. During spring and summer you have a good chance to observe foraging Cigogne blanche.

You can then walk north until you reach Seestraße where you turn east to stroll all the way to the lakeside. Alternatively you can drive or bike to the lakeside taking into account that you may miss warblers and other reed inhabitants.

Along the way you may spot some of the following – however, the birds are difficult to observe in the reed so the best season is springtime when you will have the chance to identify their songs: Phragmite des joncs, Rousserolle turdoïde, Rousserolle effarvatte, Locustelle luscinioïde, Blongios nain and Busard des roseaux. At the harbour you can observe birds of the open water such as gulls and grebes. In summer, dozens of Sterne pierregarin can be seen following the ferries across the lake.
