Just outside the town of Katherine this small 105-hectare reserve along the Katherine River is worth a stop if you are passing by.
The Low Level Nature Reserve got its name from the low-level bridge, that was designed to allow traffic to cross the Katherine River. The bridge stands only 6 feet above the dry season water level. The reserve is a nice quiet shady spot on the Katherine River with many different habitats (wetland, grassland, billabongs and pockets of monsoon forest) within easy walking distance. The many birds makes for great bird photography. There is a network of paths as well as picnic facilities. Birds you can spot include Nankeen Night-Heron, Shining Flycatcher, Sacred Kingfisher, Radjah Shelduck, Pheasant Coucal, Straw-necked Ibis, Little Pied Cormorant, Red-collared Lorikeet, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and White-winged Triller.
The Low Level Nature Reserve is just 3 kilometres along the Victoria Highway and just out of the town of Katherine. Plenty of parking as well as public toilets. Press P on the map for directions. Picnic tables and chairs in the river bed overlooking the low level weir and crossing. Note: during the Wet Season (December-April) it is not uncommon for this part of the River to be 40+ feet underwater.
Be aware of potential crocodile activity in the water, especially in the wet season.
