Large lake and wetland in suburban Perth. A 3.5-kilometre walking track with boardwalks and lookouts encircles the lake.
Galup (formerly called Lake Monger) is a large wetland that consists of 70 hectares of mainly open shallow water. In the south-west corner a reed island of 1.3 hectares was constructed to provide a summer refuge for birds. The 110 hectares of lake and the surrounding parklands are known as the Galup Reserve.
Note that the lake is used extensively for recreation. A 3.5-kilometre paved walking and cycling track encircles the lake. Boardwalks and lookouts are provided around the lake.
Among the birds you can encounter at Galup are Great Egret, Great Crested Grebe, Yellow-billed Spoonbill, Australian Pelican, Australian Shelduck, Australian Wood Duck, Pacific Black Duck, Grey Teal, Australian Shoveler, Pink-eared Duck and many more, see the birdlist below.
Galup is nestled between the suburbs of Leederville, Wembley and Glendalough and located less than 5 kilometres from the city of Perth. The lake is situated alongside the Mitchell Freeway. Galup Reserve is easily accessed with plenty of car parking and a well-connected path network. Toilets and barbecue facilities are provided. Click on a P in the map for directions to a parking lot.
