This is an extremely remote site. Jupiter Well is a go-to location for the rare Princess Parrot.
Jupiter Well is located 131 km west of the Kiwirrkurra Community on the Gary Junction Highway. It is a go-to location for the rare Princess Parrot. It lies in one of Australia's five great deserts; the Gibson, in Desert Oak vegetation.
Refer to the R. Bruce Richardson blog post for tips as how to bird the area for the parrot and to the ExplorOz link for site info.
If coming from the east there is an old dam about 18 km before Jupiter Well (just off the north side of the road, but not visible from it) which could also be prospective for the parrots; coordinates -22.8028, 126.7450.
Jupiter Well is located 131 km west of the Kiwirrkurra Community and 224 km east of Kunawarritji, on the Gary Junction Highway. Press P on the map to access Google mapping.
The term 'Highway' in the 'Gary Junction Highway' is a misnomer. The road was established in the 1960's by the legendary surveyor, Len Beadell, to facilitate major new surveys of the Gibson Desert. Beadell, having a keen sense of humour, named his roads 'highways'.
In fact, Len's 'highways' were rudimentary roads, but many of which gradually became to be used for touring access. All these roads are very remote desert accesses and are mostly quite rough and can be impassable after rains; the Gary Junction Highway is NO exception.
So... a CAUTION here. Travellers need to have high clearance 4WD vehicles and come equipped with remote area recovery and communications gear as well as ample fuel, water and provisions. Preferably there should be at least two vehicles in each party. If intending to venture out of sight of your vehicle, consider carrying a compass and GPS unit.
DO NOT rely on passers-by to assist in case of emergencies as, depending on the seasons, there may be no such travellers for days if not weeks.
