Great little lake and trail with cement walk around the lake, parking and toilets available and even a children’s playground.
Discovery Lake is a nice little lake near San Marcos. The 5 acre lake has a 0.8 mile trail that loops around it for hiking and biking. With man-made dam and rock rubble on the north side and a little dock to fish from or watch birds. You can see different species of ducks and other water birds. For example Ruddy Duck, American Coot, Common Gallinule, Pied-billed Grebe, Northern Shoveler, Wood Duck, Mallard, but also other birds like Cassin's Kingbird, Anna's Hummingbird, and California Quail.
Discovery Lake is located near San Marcos, only a mile and a half off the 78 freeway. You can park in a small parking lot. Click on the P in the map for directions. But there is plenty of street parking if it’s full. From the parking you can do the hill trail or do the easy 0.8 miles walk around the lake.
