From the dam on the east side of the Rutland Water reservoir you have a good overview over the reservoir and in winter a good chance to see amerikanjääkuikka.
A large part of the reservoir can be seen from the Rutland Water Dam. The eastern side of the reservoir is often the best place to find visiting divers, grebes and sea ducks, or occasionally karimetso amongst the more numerous merimetso. On the rocky face of the dam luotokirvinen is a possibility between late February and early April. During migration and in winter check the grassy slope behind the dam for passerines – it often attracts flocks of pipits and wagtails, and has held both pulmunen, lapinsirkku and vuorihemppo in the past.
The Rutland Water Dam is located just west of the village of Empingham. You can park at the Sykes Lane Car Park, signposted off the A606 just west of Empingham. Press P on the map for directions. From the parking you can explore the dam on foot. Access is not possible from the southern end of the dam.
