Description

Situated just four miles from the centre of Leeds, Rodley Nature Reserve is a wetland close to the River Aire. On the site of a former sewage works a nature reserve was developed. The land is situated in the Aire valley, an important flyway for migrating birds. Ponds, ditches, a marsh and several areas of open water were established. The site floods in the winter and provides good habitat for many birds. Apart from the water features, woodland, grassland and scrub are present in the reserve. Birds that can be seen at any time of year include pikku-uikku, tukkasotka, harmaasorsa, Lapasorsa, kuningaskalastaja, koskikara, meriharakka and töyhtöhyyppä. Winter visitors include taivaanvuohi, Luhtakana, punasotka, haapana, tavi and isokoskelo. Smaller species seen in the summer or all year round include hemppo, pajusirkku, viherpeippo, punatulkku, tiltaltti, pajulintu, lehtokerttu, virtavästäräkki, mustapääkerttu, pensaskerttu, kalatiira and laulurastas.
