Lakes formed by salt extraction started by the Romans, and during the Industrial Revolution today form a mixed habitat of meres, woodland and open heathland.
The variety of habitats has lead to a wide range of birdlife, ranging from kaulushaikara, kuningaskalastaja, all three British Woodpeckers, abundant grebes, waterbirds and waders, plus raptors that predate on them. May/June has a profusion of warblers and songbirds.
Paid parking is available at Marbury Park, and free parking is near Neuman's Flash to the south. Click on the P in the map to get directions. The area is straddled by a canal that leads to the Anderton Boat Lift, a fantastic piece of Britain's industrial heritage. The suggested route on the Birdingplaces-map below is about 7 km.
